Buffalo, NY (WGR 550) - Now that the Stanley Cup has been won and new Sabres GM Jason Botterill has won it for a third time, the off-season officially begins.

Botterill’s first task will be to finish up his coaching interviews with Phil Housley, Rick Tocchet and maybe Jacques Martin. He also needs to get a GM and coach in place for Rochester.

I think Monday and Tuesday is going to be big for trades around the NHL, especially from George McPhee and Vegas. Chicago is also working on dumping some salary.

The buyout period is around the corner as it begins on Thursday. Most teams including Buffalo will want to wait until the Expansion Draft is over as the buyout periods runs through June 30 at 5:00.

June 15 is the first date for team-elected salary arbitration.

Teams have until Saturday at 5:00 to submit their protected lists to Vegas for the Expansion Draft. We will find out who is on those lists Sunday at 10am.

The Golden Knights will have from June 18 through June 21 to negotiate and sign unrestricted free agents.

June 21 is when the Expansion Draft takes place as Vegas submits its player selections as 10am. The selections will be released to the public during the NHL Awards Show.

The NHL Draft is June 23 and 24 and then the deadline for qualifying offers to restricted free agents is June 25.

Botterill told the Buffalo News that he flew into Nashville today. He was on the ice for the Pens celebration as he will get a ring and his name on the Cup. He told the News that he will back at work in Buffalo on Monday.
