Sabres trade for Nathan Beaulieu

Buffalo, NY (WGR 550) - Jason Botterill has made his first trade as Sabres general manager. Buffalo acquires former first-round pick Nathan Beaulieu from Montreal for one of Buffalo's third-round picks which is 68th overall.

The Canadiens selected the defenseman 17th overall in 2011. In 74 games last season Beaulieu had four goals and 24 assists for 28 points.

In 225 NHL games the 6' 2", 205-pound D-man has seven goals and 53 assists for 60 points.

The 24-year-old is a guy who can skate that probably can benefit from Phil Housley being his coach.

There is one big problem with the acquisition of Beaulieu. He doesn't fit Terry Pegula's model for the franchise. After Tim Murray and Dan Bylsma were fired Pegula said he wanted character, structure, discipline and communication. Beaulieu was arrested in 2013 and pled guilty to serious assault charges. He got probation, but as you read about this incident, it does not scream character. It was also four years ago when he was 20.
