Sammy takes team reps for first time, Lawson impressive as Bills open minicamp

June 13, 2017 - 3:10 pm

Before the Bills took the field for their first mandatory minicamp practice of 2017, head coach Sean McDermott gave an update on some of the injured players:

RB LeSean McCoy (stomach virus)
DT Kyle Williams (neck stiffness)
LT Cordy Glenn (ankle)

WR Sammy Watkins (foot)

McDermott said he doesn’t know how long McCoy will be out with his stomach bug, but added “the important thing is that we get him hydrated and in a position where he can perform.”

The head coach referred to Glenn as week-to-week with his ankle injury. Glenn was on the sidelines in a walking boot:

That's a big boot. (Glenn still week to week)

Watkins took part in 11-on-11 for the first time this offseason.  He took just a rep or two at the start of each offense vs. defense session.

In the meantime, offensive tackle Seantrel Henderson was back in pads after missing several days last week with a cyst.

Some other notes about the practice:

—Jerel Worthy got most of the starting snaps in place of Kyle Williams.

—The starting LBs were Lorenzo Alexander and Ramon Humber (OLB) and Preston Brown (ILB). McDermott did not rule out Brown or Reggie Ragland moving outside during camp or the season if that is the best combination to use.

—Rookie Dion Dawkins once again worked as the first-team LT in place of Cordy Glenn. Jordan Mills was at RT.

—As Mark Ludwiczak of Bills Digest noted, second-year defensive end Shaq Lawson had an impressive day:

Shaq Lawson awfully impressive to start mandatory minicamp. Quick off the edge, couple of "sacks" in team drills.

The team will be back on the field tomorrow for day two of their three-day mandatory minicamp.
