Botterill says he's trying to do an Eichel extension now

Buffalo Sabres forward Jack Eichel still remains without a long-term extension as of Monday. Reports throughout the summer have pointed towards a deal getting done before the season, but in the last couple weeks it's looked like Eichel will go to camp without an extension. TSN's Darren Dreger told The Instigators, I'm now getting the sense that, from a player's perspective, he's okay starting the season without a contract extension in place."

Eichel does still have a year remaining on his entry-level deal with the Sabres, and he would then be a restricted free agent. The one positive out of this situation is that the Sabres aren't worried about Eichel leaving this year. However, the team certainly wants to sign their top guy on a long-term deal sooner rather than later. Also, Eichel is likely going to want a significant pay raise from the $925,000 base salary he currently has.

Sabres general manager Jason Botterill joined our own Pat Malacaro during the first intermission of the Sabres and Penguins Prospects Challenge game. Here is what he said regarding Eichel:

"We'll continue to talk. I have a great relationship with his agency. Jack's focusing on the season, but we'll continue to work. Bottom line is both parties really want to get a deal done. I feel very very confident that we will get a deal done in the near future."

"We're trying to get a deal done now. I think both parties are very optimistic a deal can be put in place...Jack won't let this be a distraction."

Botterill also talked about the prospects, and the younger guys in the NHL. He says he thinks we'll see more from Zemgus Girgensons, Sam Reinhart, and Rasmus Ristolainen this upcoming season.
